I'm guessing you probably don't solicit plugin ideas, but I have a thought anyway, just in case.

I get dozens and dozens of spam users a day who use spam links as their user homepage URL. Considering that users on my forum typically don't have homepage urls anyway, it would be nice if there were a plugin that would simply remove the homepage field on the user registration form, and then automatically reject any submissions that try to include a homepage URL anyway. I imagine this might actually stop my spam users altogether.

Removing fields is not impossible but tricky with the bbpress api.

My human-test plugin used to be able to stop most of those but they've gotten very clever at getting past.

I recently added code to use the stopforumspam.com api and it now catches about 99% of them.

Just like email, spammers are becoming a very serious problem on forums, they must waste huge amounts of cpu time.

That sounds great, _ck_! Is the new stopforumspam code part of human test, or is it another plugin altogether? Is it available for download yet?

I haven't published the update yet.

Okay I just pushed it to the svn so you should see 0.9.5 soon or just download directly from here:

Fantastic! Thank you so much, _ck_.

I've already got a couple of emails confirming that spam users have been blocked. I've sent you a small something as my thanks.

Minor requests for a future update: An option to delete the user outright instead of marking it as inactive would be nice, as well as an option to not send out the emails would be great now that I'm confident the plugin is working well, but I've very happy with all of your plugins, so thank you again!

If you delete the user they can just register again.

I guess what you are saying is to catch them before they register and just let them keep failing.

    Hi _ck_,

Thanks a million for continuing to update this plugin - the stopforumspam addition is excellent, and your efforts really do make a big difference to the time admins need to spend manually keeping forums clean.

Like mark_m, I am wondering if there is a simple way to run this check _before_ the user is registered (and then send them into the wilderness), rather than letting them register and then marking them as inactive?

I am familiar with php, but not intimately with the bbpress code. For example, I wonder if there is a simple replacement to add_action('bb_new_user', 'human_test_stopforumspam'); that would be executed before the user is added to the database.

    Brad.

I've found if you block them before they start that they will just come back via another ip or email address. This way it wastes their time at least for a minute because their code thinks they've registered but they have no idea why it won't post.

But it would take just changing the action hook to make it happen before the registration is processed. Basically you'd move the check to where the human-test code is tested, before the registration is made.

Thanks for the swift reply! I'll give it a try to see what effect it has on the registrations.
