In case you haven't heard, Automattic, the company that owns WordPress and bbPress (and I have absolutely no affiliation other than independently running the software and writing a few plugins for myself) has acquired a huge cash investment.

So they are now promising big/fast code improvements to bbPress, including some spinoff projects aka BackPress and TalkPress.

I'm still figuring out what it all means myself, but you can read all these for more:

Meanwhile I can only promise that I will try to keep my plugins working through build 1075. I need to see how drastically their changes breaks my work and if the project will fork (or not).

Here's a video of Matt talking about BackPress and TalkPress

I hope all of this benefits bbpress. Honestly I love the minimalism and flexibility and wouldn't want any of that changed. What we need is proper documentation of the functions.

Documentation is a low priority because Matt/Automattic will never spend money on paid employees for documentation. They basically use the open source to get debugging and extra features done but use the paid employees for higher end features that they need on the wordpress.com site.

All the WordPress docs (in the codex) were done by volunteers to the best of my knowledge over a period of years.

I think I saw someone is working on some PHPDOC work for bbPress based on some chatter in the irc channel. But for now I basically just keep my search text feature always open when working on plugins and look for keywords in the source.
